Product, Safety, and Certification
Hexagon lights are modular LED lighting systems made up of individual hexagon-shaped light tubes connected together to form a grid pattern on your ceiling or wall. They provide bright, even, shadow-free illumination and a distinctive modern look. They are commonly used in garages, workshops, gyms, detailing studios, barbershops, and other spaces that need strong, clean lighting.
HexSpace is an Australian company and all our products are designed specifically for the Australian and New Zealand market. Key differences include:
- SAA approved and RCM certified for Australian electrical safety standards
- 240V rated with a proper Australian 3-pin earthed power plug
- 3-pin design with earth wire throughout the entire system, including every light tube and connector, not just the power cable
- Aluminium housing for better heat dissipation and durability (not plastic)
- CRI above 90 with flicker-free performance
- 50,000+ hour LED lifespan
- Australian-based customer support in Perth, WA
Yes. All HexSpace hexagon lights carry SAA approval and the RCM compliance mark, meaning they meet Australian and New Zealand electrical safety standards. Our systems are designed for 240V infrastructure with a 3-pin earthed design throughout the entire system. This means every light tube, every connector, and the power cable all carry an earth wire for protection, not just the power plug. You can verify product certification through the Australian Government's Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) database at eess.gov.au. When comparing products, check whether the earth wire runs through the full system or only the power cable.
In early 2026, a hexagon light kit sold at a major Australian retailer was recalled by the ACCC after regulators found it had exposed live metal pins, inadequate insulation, non-approved power cables, and a fake RCM compliance mark on the packaging. The product posed a risk of electric shock. Before purchasing any hexagon lights, check for these signs of a properly certified product:
- A genuine RCM mark (not just printed on the box, but verified in the EESS database)
- A proper Australian 3-pin plug with an earth wire
- 3-pin connectors with earth wire throughout the entire system, not just the power cable (many cheap products use 2-pin connectors between light tubes with no earthing)
- Aluminium housing (plastic housings dissipate heat poorly and may yellow over time)
- A named Australian supplier with local contact details
Hexagon lights and LED batten lights serve different purposes. A few LED battens provide basic overhead illumination but create gaps and shadows between fixtures. A hexagon grid covers the full ceiling area with connected, even lighting, virtually eliminating shadows, which is why detailers, mechanics, and workshop owners prefer them. HexSpace systems also cost more because they use aluminium housing (not plastic), high-CRI LEDs (90+), a 3-pin earthed design with ground protection through every light tube and connector, and carry full Australian electrical safety certification. The cheapest hexagon lights on Amazon often use 2-pin connectors with no earthing between tubes, lower-quality components, and may lack proper certification for Australia.
Each kit includes LED light tubes, all necessary connectors (two-way, three-way, T-connectors), an Australian-standard power cable with 3-pin plug, mounting screws, and a printed instruction sheet with wiring diagram. Everything you need to assemble, mount, and power the system is in the box.
The light tubes use an aluminium housing with a polycarbonate diffuser cover. Aluminium provides better structural strength and heat dissipation compared to the plastic housings used in many cheaper alternatives. The connectors and light tubes all use a 3-pin design with an earth wire running through the entire system for added electrical safety. The polycarbonate cover ensures even light distribution without glare and resists yellowing over time.
Installation and Setup
Yes, for plug-in installation. HexSpace hexagon lights are designed for DIY setup. You assemble the grid on the floor, test it, then mount it to your ceiling or wall. No specialist tools are needed beyond a drill, ladder, spirit level, and tape measure. Most customers complete installation in 2 to 4 hours depending on system size. For the full guide, see our Installation Guide.
For plug-in setup, no. The system comes with an Australian 3-pin power adapter that plugs into any standard 240V outlet. For hardwired installation (connecting the lights directly to your electrical circuit with no visible power cable), yes. Australian and New Zealand law requires all hardwired electrical work to be carried out by a licensed electrician. A licensed electrician cannot legally install uncertified lighting products, so always confirm your lights are RCM certified before arranging a hardwired install.
Plug-in means the lights connect to a standard power outlet using the included power adapter. It is the simplest option and requires no electrician. Hardwired means the lights are connected directly into your electrical circuit, usually behind the ceiling, giving a cleaner look with no visible cables. Hardwired installation must be done by a licensed electrician. Both options work with all HexSpace lighting systems. See our Installation Guide for detailed planning advice on both options.
The power cable can enter the system from any outer corner of the hexagon grid. You are not limited to one fixed position. This means you can choose the corner closest to your power point or electrical connection for the shortest and cleanest cable run.
HexSpace hexagon lights can be mounted on plasterboard (gyprock), timber, concrete, and steel surfaces. For plasterboard ceilings, use wall plugs or anchors for a secure hold. For concrete or steel, use appropriate fixings for the material.
Yes. The same screw slots on the connector pieces can be used for wall mounting. Wall-mounted hexagon lights are popular in barbershops, retail spaces, and studios where a feature wall effect is desired.
Yes. For higher ceilings or a floating modern look, you can use our Suspension Wire Kit to hang the lights at your preferred height. This is ideal for ceilings above 3 metres or spaces where you want the lights closer to your work area.
For plug-in installation, you just need a nearby power outlet. No pre-wiring is needed. For hardwired installation, ask your electrician to run a power cable to where the lights will be installed. If you are building or renovating, this is best done during the rough-in electrical stage so the wiring is hidden inside the ceiling.
Size, Layout, and Customisation
This depends on your garage size and how much ceiling coverage you want. As a general guide:
- Single garage (approx. 3m x 6m): 7-grid or 8-grid system
- Double garage (approx. 6m x 6m): 14-grid system or two 8-grid systems
- Large workshop or commercial space: custom layout recommended
Yes. HexSpace hexagon lights are modular, so you can configure them in many different shapes and patterns. We also offer a custom design service for larger or non-standard spaces. Contact us with your ceiling dimensions and we can recommend a layout or provide a custom quote.
Yes. The connector system is designed to link multiple kits together. You can purchase an additional hexagon light kit and connect it to your existing setup to expand your layout at any time.
Both options are available. The border provides a clean rectangular frame around your hexagon grid, giving a more finished and structured look. Without a border, you get a pure honeycomb pattern. It is a visual preference and both options function the same way.
Yes. If the lights are surface-mounted with screws, you can unscrew the connector pieces and disassemble the grid. The modular design means you can reassemble the system in a new location. If the lights were hardwired, you will need a licensed electrician to disconnect and reconnect them.
Performance and Features
HexSpace hexagon lights produce high lumen output with even light distribution across the full grid. The connected grid design spreads light across the entire ceiling area, reducing shadows and eliminating dark corners. This is the main advantage over individual batten lights or single-point fixtures. For specific lumen values, check the product specifications on each product page.
HexSpace standard hexagon lights are available in multiple colour temperatures:
- 3000K (Warm White): softer, ambient feel. Suited for barbershops and retail displays
- 4000K (Neutral White): balanced, natural tone. Good for workshops and general use
- 5000K (Cool White): clean, bright. Popular for gyms and workspaces
- 6500K (Daylight Bright): maximum brightness and clarity. Best for garages, detailing, and precision work
No. HexSpace standard and large hexagon lights are not dimmable, and we do not offer a dimmable version. If you want colour effects and adjustable brightness, our RGB hexagon lights come with a remote control for colour and brightness settings. Do not connect standard hexagon lights to an external dimmer switch, as this can cause flickering, buzzing, and damage to the LED driver.
HexSpace hexagon lights are designed to be flicker-free with stable LED drivers. If you experience flickering, the most common causes are connecting to an external dimmer switch (which is not supported) or sharing a circuit with high-draw equipment like compressors or welders that cause voltage fluctuations. For best results, use a dedicated power circuit for your lighting system.
HexSpace hexagon lights are rated for 50,000+ hours of use. At 8 hours per day, that is over 17 years of daily use. The aluminium housing helps manage heat, which is the primary factor in LED longevity. Cheaper plastic-housed alternatives typically last 20,000 to 30,000 hours because poor heat dissipation accelerates LED degradation.
All LED lights produce some heat, but HexSpace lights use aluminium housing specifically designed for effective heat dissipation. This keeps operating temperatures low, extends LED lifespan, and makes the system safe for continuous use. Aluminium performs significantly better than the plastic housings used in many cheaper alternatives, which can trap heat and shorten the life of the LEDs.
For professional car detailing and paint correction, a CRI (Colour Rendering Index) of 90 or above is recommended. Higher CRI means colours appear more accurate under the light, making it easier to spot swirl marks, scratches, and paint imperfections. All HexSpace standard hexagon lights have CRI above 90. Choose 5000K or 6500K colour temperature for the clearest visibility during detailing work. The grid layout also helps because light comes from multiple angles, reducing the harsh shadows that single-point fixtures create.
Yes. HexSpace hexagon lights are used across a wide range of commercial environments including gyms, barbershops, retail showrooms, workshops, detailing studios, and content creation spaces. The even light distribution, modern look, and robust aluminium construction make them suitable for spaces that need both strong performance and visual impact. For barbershops and retail, 3000K or 4000K provides a warm, inviting atmosphere. For gyms and workshops, 5000K or 6500K provides maximum brightness.
No. HexSpace hexagon lights are designed for indoor use only. They are not IP-rated for outdoor exposure, moisture, or wet environments such as car wash bays. For garages with good weather protection and a sealed ceiling, they are perfectly suitable.
Our connectors use a locking clip design, so loose connections are not an issue. If a single tube stops working, it will not affect the rest of the system. Simply replace that tube and the system works as normal. Contact us if you need a replacement tube.
Wipe the light covers and aluminium frames with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth every few months. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners as they can fog the polycarbonate diffuser over time. Regular cleaning keeps the lights at maximum brightness and helps with heat dissipation, especially in dusty garage or workshop environments. No other maintenance is needed.
LED batten lights (the long tube-style fixtures commonly sold at hardware stores) are affordable and easy to install, but they light the area directly below them and leave gaps and shadows between fixtures. Hexagon lights form a connected grid across the ceiling, providing more even coverage with fewer dark spots. This makes hex lights better for tasks that require consistent visibility across a large area, such as detailing, mechanical work, or gym training. Batten lights may still be the better choice for smaller spaces or tight budgets where full-ceiling coverage is not needed.
