How to Choose the Right LED Workshop Lights
Choosing the right workshop lights depends on how you use the space, the size of the area, and your ceiling height. Here are the key factors to consider.
Brightness and Coverage
Workshop tasks like measuring, cutting, soldering, and inspecting require clear, even light. Rather than focusing on a single lumen number, look at how evenly the light is distributed. A hexagon LED layout covers more ceiling area than a row of battens, which means fewer blind spots and less eye strain during long work sessions.
Colour Temperature
For most workshops, a cool white (5000K to 6500K) colour temperature provides the clearest visibility. It makes fine details, markings, and colour differences easier to see, which matters for mechanical work, woodworking, and precision tasks. If your workshop doubles as a relaxation or hobby space, neutral white (4000K) offers a comfortable balance.
Ceiling Height and Mounting
Standard Australian workshops and garage workshops typically have ceilings around 2.4 to 3 metres. Surface-mounted hexagon LED systems work well at this height, keeping the light source close to the workspace for maximum brightness without harsh glare. For workshops with higher ceilings or exposed rafters, a ceiling suspension wire kit lets you hang the lighting grid at the ideal height, keeping it level and evenly positioned over the work area.
